Like many boatbuilders, we paint our boats with Awlgrip. Because our hulls are painted, we use Awlcare as opposed to wax prior to launching our boats in the spring. Check out Dave & Pete's answers to some FAQ's regarding Awlcare below:
Why do you use Awlcare?
It is a protectant. It extends the life of the paint and gives the boat that high gloss finish and makes it low maintenance for the season - easily cleaned with mild soap and water.
Should I wax the boat?
If it is a painted hull, no. The residue can cause the paint to look yellow and attracts dirt requiring more overall maintenance.
Do you use Awlcare on ALL boats?
No, Awlcare is used on boats that have been painted with Awlgrip or Awlcraft. We use wax on boats that were not painted; that have gel coat finishes.
Why do you have to apply Awlcare every year?
Just like wax used on a car, Awlcare will break down in the elements and harsh summer sun & weather. Some people recommend applying Awlcare every 3-4 months.
AWLCARE is a hand-applied, non-abrasive, synthetic polymer formulated to protect AWLGRIP, AWLCRAFT 2000, and AWLGRIP 2 topcoats. AWLCARE contains no harsh abrasives and will not scratch the painted surface. It leaves a non-yellowing, protective polymer coating which lasts through multiple washings. AWLCARE removes mild stains such as water spots and diesel soot, and increases resistance to attack from acid rain and other environmental pollutants with regular applications.
